Keep your balances low
The key establishing good credit or reestablishing credit is to keep your balances low. Aim to
keep your balances to less than 30% of your available credit limit. Credit scores suffer when
balances are as high as the credit limit. If possible keep balances at zero. Retail cards have
significantly higher rates than bank credit cards and paying your balance off each month will
save you money.
Make on-time payments
Once you get the retail credit cards it is imperative to make your payments on time. Even one
late payment will have a tremendous negative effect on your credit score. Avoid late payments
at all costs. You may even want to set up an on-line bill payment plan to have your payments
automatically deducted from your bank account each month.
