Teach School

Teach full-time in a low-income community for five years. This program
encourages teachers to enter and remain in the field of teaching. Other
programs offer a certain percentage off your loan for each year you
teach.  For instance, one year will earn you 15% off your loan, the
second year will get you 20%, for the third and fourth 25% and 30% for
the fifth. Contact your school district's administration to see which
schools are eligible for federal student loan forgiveness.

Volunteer

Volunteer for AmeriCorps, Peace Corps or Volunteers in Service to
America (VISTA). This program recognizes those who volunteer to make
a difference in homelessness, developing countries, hunger and poverty.

helps young lawyers to be more service-oriented.

Become a Doctor

Work as a physician or a registered nurse in a remote or low-income
area for a set number of years. Groups like the National Health Service
Corps offer medical school loan forgiveness programs to physicians who
agree to practice for a set number of years in areas that lack adequate
medical care (including remote and/or economically depressed regions).
Serve in the Military

Students who are in the Army National Guard may be eligible for their
Student Loan Repayment Program, which offers up to $10,000. (Note,
the military and veterans' associations provide many scholarships and
tuition assistance programs. This practice is comparable for federal
student loan forgiveness.

Maryland state and local government employees who earn less than
$40,000 gross annually may be eligible for a loan
assistance/repayment program to study law, nursing, physical and
occupational therapy, social work and education. Contact the Maryland
